Hy-phenated

‘The Creator made them male and female,’ and…‘a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife…’
Matthew 19:4

“I’m hyphenated!” Emily announced.
“What’s hyphenated?” a friend asked.
“I have two last names,” Emily explained. “I am Emily Markle-James, with a hyphen!” she said delightedly.
Which prompted the next question, “Why do you have two last names?”
“Because, silly,” she said smiling, “my Mommy and Daddy have different last names.”
“You know,” one boy offered, “Moms use the Dad’s last name when they get married.”
“Oh, they’re not married. They just love each other!” she innocently proclaimed.
“Well…” another girl asked, “if they love each other why didn’t they get married?”
“Mommy and Daddy say that if you really love each other there’s no reason to get married,” Emily answered. “They say it’s just a piece of paper.”
“What’s just a piece of paper?” the boy asked.
“A marriage paper, silly!” she said laughingly.
“What’s a marriage paper?” he asked curiously.
“It’s just some piece of paper about marriage,” Emily said, not really knowing how else to answer. She’d never asked her parents that question, so she had no other answer.
“I know!” said one girl. “It’s a paper that says a marriage is legal. It means mommies and daddies can live together and have kids.”
That hung in silence for a moment before Emily said, “I’m a kid. And Mommy and Daddy don’t have a marriage paper. I guess that piece of paper doesn’t mean anything!” her adolescent theology resolved.
God-ordained law will always be subverted by people who disagree with and would change it to suit their needs, citing antiquated idealism; especially where sex and the family are concerned.
Our children have no control over who their parents are, or what they believe. And what we believe is passed on to our children as they mature. It is critical that we teach them the truth about civil unions, whereby couples live together under man’s common law, vs. God’s spiritual law as it pertains to the marriage covenant. One is permissible, yet unacceptable before God. The other is pure, creating good spiritual health and moral character.

Prayer

“Help us teach our children about the sanctity of marriage, Lord, and how they should live within Spiritual absolutes. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
