All is Right With the World

He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

Isaiah 53:2

I watched as a young woman pulled up to the store and stepped out of her SUV. Dressed in nurse’s scrubs, I figured she was either headed for work or just got off. I was about to discover the answer…

As she headed for the door, an older woman emerged from the store pushing a shopping cart with a small child in the seat.

The young woman’s lips moved. Instantly, the toddler’s head turned, attempting to locate the owner of the voice. When she did, the reaction was immediate. The smile that lit her little face said two things: one, she knew the woman well; and two, she adored her!

She turned in the cart and began reaching, stretching for the woman. The young woman plucked the child from the cart and hugged her. The little girl, in turn, affectionately laid her head on the woman’s shoulder.

Mom was here, and all was right with the world!

Voice recognition is a powerful thing. To her children, a Mother’s voice is easily recognizable; it has an intimate quality that is unique to her alone. A beloved child can pick their mother out of a vast crowd; and rightly so. It is the voice they’ve listened to from the moment their ears were formed in the womb. Even with our backs turned we see a picture of Mom in our mind before two syllables have been spoken. To a child there is nothing more beautiful or comforting.

There is another voice which will have the same effect the moment we hear it. Scripture says His face would not stand out in a crowd. But when He speaks our name our head will turn in His direction, desperately seeking to locate Him. To a child of God there is nothing more beautiful or comforting. As He reaches for us we will know that Jesus is here, and all is right with the world.

Prayer

“Jesus, I get excited just thinking about hearing You speak my name! I look forward to Your embrace and the chance to lay my head on Your shoulder and hear You say, ‘I love you!’ Thank You for loving me. Amen.”
